Sponsor your Family Members

How does it work?

A permanent resident of Canada, currently residing in Canada, or a Canadian citizen may sponsor certain members of his or her family to come to Canada.

Family members who can be sponsored include.

  • A spouse, common-law or conjugal partner;
  • Dependent children;
  • Adopted children; and
  • Parents and grandparents.
  • Orphaned brother, sister, nephew, niece or grandchild (Meet requirements)
  • Other relatives: Related by blood or adoption, of any age, if you meet all of the conditions.
  • A brother or sister cannot be sponsored. If a brother or sister wishes to come to Canada, he or she must qualify on his or her own under one of Immigration Canada’s other permanent residence program

WHO CAN SPONSOR

To be eligible to sponsor a family member, the sponsor must prove that he or she is a Canadian citizen or permanent resident in Canada;

  • Not be in prison;
  • Not have a criminal record or a history of violent crime;
  • Is financially sufficient and is not bankrupt or receiving social assistance for a reason other than a disability;
  • Not have a history of non-compliance with any court-issued support order, prior sponsorship or immigration debt;
  • and that the sponsor and the alien(s) have agreed to sponsorship, including an undertaking that the sponsor will provide financial support to the alien(s), if necessary, for a specified period of time, and that the alien(s) will make all reasonable efforts to support themselves once in Canada.

If the sponsor is a Canadian citizen currently residing outside Canada, he/she must demonstrate that he/she will be residing in Canada at the time permanent residence is granted to his/her family member. If the sponsor is a permanent resident of Canada, he or she must reside in Canada at the time of the application and during its processing.

EVALUATING YOUR ELIGIBILITY

Eligibility to sponsor is based on several factors:

  • Age: Sponsors must be at least 18.
  • Status: Must be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident.
  • Residency: While Canadian citizens can sponsor from anywhere, permanent residents must live in Canada.
  • Financial Capacity: Sponsors should prove they can financially support the persons they sponsor.

Before starting the sponsorship process, it’s wise to do an assessment.
